All contributions progress EDEN’s mission to give youth life-changing opportunities and provide healthy foods in food-insecure localities. Your donations work towards:

  • Combating poverty by training youth in small business development and helping them to acquire licenses, tools, and other resources that enable them to turn urban agriculture into a learning experience of small-business development.
  • Reducing the impacts of crime by giving youth practical training, a supportive community, and employment opportunities.
  • Improving health by providing hands-on training in agriculture, supplemented by nutritional trainings and food demonstrations. Project EDEN™ seeks to create an environment where cultural norms that support obesity and poor nutrition are challenged and superseded by the desire for healthy living.

Volunteering

Volunteers have the unique opportunity to explore the workings of a functioning urban food hub, while contributing to the mission of Project EDEN™. Volunteerism isn’t simply a way to gain volunteer credits, although we do provide them, but also to learn about ways to become self-sufficient and engage with local, non-industrial food systems. As urban agriculture becomes an increasingly viable solution to a host of ecological and social consequences posed by metropolitan development, volunteerism is a great way to improve the welfare of the immediate community, while considering the large-scale Processed with VSCO with a6 presetimplications of burgeoning methods of organic agriculture in urban spheres.

Volunteers get exposed to traditional and innovative gardening techniques, crop education, nutritional education, food-handling and distribution. If you aren’t afraid to get your hands dirty, you’re sure to have a rewarding experience! Besides, even if you are, we have plenty of gardening gloves to go around.

Summer Youth Employment Program

Project EDEN™ first began hosting summer employees in partnership with the District of Columbia’s Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program in 2013, with the hiring of 6 youth. Since then, we have hired 80+ youth and young adults in ongoing efforts to craft meaningful memories and lasting job opportunities for the youth of our inner-city community.

Summer 2017 Youth Employment excursion to NYC!Summer employees learn critical skills in urban agriculture and environmental sciences to support the production and distribution of organic fruits and produce. Employees also have the opportunity to learn about nutrition and food safety, obtain licensing (18 and older), and be engaged in the small business entrepreneurial training components of Project EDEN™ as full-time employees! Not to mention the annual excursions and trips that we enjoy, which have in the past included: The White House, The U.S. Capitol
Building, an overnight stay at the Baltimore Inner Harbor, a day trip to NYC, Fredrick Douglass’ Anacostia Home, and visits to other farm and garden initiatives!
